Black Rock

Black Rock is an experimental moving-image and print-based project exploring alchemical transformation, contemporary ritual, and the relationship between the material and the metaphysical. Developed through my pioneering research into intaglio and etching-based animation, the work investigates how analogue printmaking can expand the expressive and conceptual language of animated film.

The project has evolved through multiple international research residencies, including AGA Lab (Amsterdam) and collaborations with La Máquina (Oaxaca, Mexico). Its visual development encompasses monoprints, etchings, screen-printed fabrics, and a corresponding animated installation.

Black Rock has received significant critical recognition and international dissemination. It was awarded First Prize at the RBSA Print Prize Biennale (2024) and received three Jury Prizes at the Derby Print Open (2024). The work was shortlisted for the RENSEP Artist Awards (2024), supporting research at the intersection of artistic and esoteric practices.

Exhibitions include the 11th Douro Biennial (2022), the 5th Global Print Expo Douro (2022), the RBSA Print Prize Biennale (2024), the Derby Print Open (2024), and the AGA Lab exhibition ‘Ut supra, sic infra’ at De Bouwput Gallery, Amsterdam (2022).

As an expanding body of work, Black Rock informed my wider research into analogue animation, material storytelling, and contemporary ritual practices. This project was also at the basis of BFI-Funded short film 'Re-Mind' (2027)
