| Description: | “I’ll listen, I’ll nod, I’ll smile"...these words reverberate through the soundscape commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for The Verb on International Womens Day 2019. ‘Smile, Kill The Angel’ follows the program’s theme of discarded words and names, inspired by Professor Ann Oakley’s ‘Women Peace & Welfare’, words from this are mingled with Virginia Woolf’s essay Killing the Angel in The House, and paraphrases Margaret Atwood to finish. Layers of vocalisations and extended technique are interspersed with meditational practices such as the singing bowl, pictured, to evolve a sonic mapping of historical prejudice and the excavation of authenticity through the utterance of lost names. Composition and performance commissioned for The Verb on BBC Radio 3. |
