| Description: | Man Like... is a duo exhibition by Jerome Ince-Mitchell and C-Dyer Jerome Ince-Mitchell has invited artist C-DYER to exhibit alongside him in an exhibition that will showcase photography, sound art and audience participatory painting. This show aims to highlight the interconnected cultures of UK inner cities, towns and villages that have been largely informed by London based music genres and the language that they popularised In 2012, historian David Starkey famously said live on the BBC: "The whites have become black. A particular sort of violent destructive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion and black and white boys and girls operate in this language together. "This language, which is wholly false, which is this Jamaican patois that has been intruded in England and that is why so many of us have this sense of literally of a foreign country." Although Starkey identified language as the key factor unifying the seemingly disparate groups, what he had failed to realise is that these people had grown up in a period where the notion of a particular language or subculture was not defined by race but its attitude. This exhibition seeks to highlight some of the connections between the Grime pioneers, the language they popularised and ways this living language continues to inform our contemporary realities. |
