Odyssey Home

Odyssey Home is a performance series that fuses veteran writing with Homer's Odyssey and digital media to share the experiences and challenges veterans face when leaving to serve - and when coming back home.

This iteration was created as part of a veteran-focused series of programming on the campus of St Lawrence University in Canton, NY. The all-female cast of veterans wove veteran stories and written artefacts together with excerpts from Homer’s Odyssey. The veterans onstage had served in the US Army, Marines, and Air Force. The performance centred on the idea of home, and how that notion changes when one leaves and returns.

Creating Peace from Conflict. Chandler, United States
This iteration was created as part of the ‘America in Times of Conflict - Creating Peace from Conflict’ series of public programming in Chandler, Arizona, USA. It wove veteran stories and written artefacts together with excerpts from Homer’s Odyssey. The veterans onstage - one cisgendered woman, one transgendered man, and two cisgendered men, had served in the US Army, Marines, and Navy. The performance centred on the idea of home, and how that notion changes when one leaves and returns.

Association for Theatre in Higher Education Annual Conference. Boston, United States
This iteration, performed at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education conference in Boston, MA, USA, was the conference-specific recreation of the performance created as part of a veteran-focused series of programming on the campus of St Lawrence University in Canton, NY. It combined performance with dramaturgical contextualisation by director Erika Hughes. The all-female cast of veterans wove veteran stories and written artefacts together with excerpts from Homer’s Odyssey. The veterans onstage had served in the US Army, Marines, and Air Force.
