| Description: | Painting 04: assisted lucernae (2025) is the fourth painting from a series of monochromes made in reference to Roman frescoes and BSR residency. The painting is a re-invention of a Roman oil lamp, the primary source of artificial light in ancient Rome. These lamps often featured intricate designs, mythological figures or animals. When lit, these figures cast moving 'living' shadows into the space, blurring human and mythological figures onto the surrounding Frescoes – in a merging of sensory experience, spiritual life, and social environment. The upright monochrome held by a domestic modern bracket re-enacts the idea of an oil lamp and the luminosity it emits in a domestic environment. |
