Reading the Room: Environmental Coding and Queer Belonging

This paper explores how atmosphere might operate as a form of non-verbal communication within queer spatial environments, using the gay sauna as a case study. Bringing spatial practice into conversation with semiotics, multimodality and queer spatial histories, it considers how conditions such as darkness, humidity, sound, visibility and thresholds influence how environments are read and inhabited. The paper proposes the idea of environmental indexicality to describe how material, sensory and atmospheric conditions can signal activity, presence or possibility without explicitly representing them. It also introduces atmospheric fluency as an embodied capacity to recognise and navigate these environmental and social cues through cultural familiarity and participation. Drawing on histories of cruising, bathhouses and coded queer communication, the paper argues that learning to ‘read the room’ can contribute to belonging, allowing people to recognise and participate in shared spatial and cultural worlds.
