Description: | Eggebert-and-Gould work with collections, museums, archives, gardens and landscapes (both real and imagined). ‘Operating in locations used to promote knowledge or collate certain domains of thought, their work often subverts, unravels, or plays at the edges of presented discourses.’ Inspired by the ancient myth of the Scythian or Vegetable Lamb (a persistent myth of a plant believed to grow sheep as its fruit) and by contemporary transgenic experimentations, Eggebert-and-Gould use topiary and cast lead to create The Vegetable Lamb. Standing each side of the western door at the tower’s base and framing the pastoral landscape beyond, the lambs are at once familiar and grotesque. The accompanying copperplate etchings Scythian Lamb (Mutton and Lamb) function both as a plan and a copy of the topiary box plants. Weighted by sandbags, they quietly echo the presence of the monstrous beasts at the door and the vulnerability of the pastoral landscape beyond. |

Additional Information (Publicly available): | Art in romney marsh 2010 returns for a fourth year. It is a contemporary arts project providing an opportunity for artists to create site specific work in response to the inspiring medieval churches of Romney Marsh. Romney Marsh is located in a unique landscape on the south east tip of the Kent coastline, within easy reach of Ashford, Rye and Hastings. The juxtaposition of contemporary art and the ancient church sites creates an opportunity for an exciting dialogue between the ancient and modern. |
