Description: | With the Melting of the Snows was a project in response to Martin Bell’s final radio broadcast as the BBC War correspondent in which he reflects on reporting the Bosnia War. The resulting artist’s Book contains images by Paul Coldwell and a transcript of the text by Martin Bell. The bookwork was shown as part of an installation with ‘an abandoned landscape’ of 19 bronzes, each a skeletal image of an object, such as a book, a child’s toy, a bottle and a picture frame at the Eagle Gallery in 1998 and then again in the survey show of Coldwell’s work By this I mean… at Arthouse in Dublin in 1999. The complete set of individual prints and bookwork were acquired by the Imperial War Museum and the Tate Gallery. Imperial War Museum North is presenting the UK’s first major exhibition about British war correspondents, revealing the people behind the news – with many unique, historic items from household name reporters on display for the first time. Being a war correspondent is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It is also seen as one of the most exciting. This exhibition will look in-depth at some of the century’s most celebrated war correspondents, revealing dramatic true stories, the pressures they have faced and the changing nature of war reporting from 1914 to the present day. |
