Evans, Geraint (2012) The sheer innocence of a curious gaze. [Show/Exhibition]
Type of Research: | Show/Exhibition |

Creators: | Evans, Geraint |
Description: | ‘The sheer innocence of a curious gaze’ was an output of ongoing research that aims to develop a painterly narrative fiction in order to investigate W J T Mitchell’s claim that “landscape is a natural scene mediated by culture”. The work aims to further our understanding of our relationship with the natural world and how we shape or simulate landscape in order to form something idealistically ‘natural’ or culturally specific. Often this study is framed within an urban or suburban context, recognising Angus Carlyle’s term ‘synthetic nature’ and Roger Silverstone’s ‘hybridized space’. |
Additional Information (Publicly available): | Newport Museum and Art Gallery was renovated and rebranded during spring/summer 2012. The permanent collection was separated from the temporary gallery space, in order to establish a more rigorous and dynamic contemporary arts programme within a discrete space. Geraint Evans' solo exhibition relaunched the space in the autumn of 2012. |
