Memory of a hope

Contribution to group exhibition.

The title of this group exhibition is taken from a text by Henri Lefebvre: “Ideology collapses and vanishes, utopianism atrophies, but something great is left behind: the memory of a hope."

Lucy Johnston and Matthew Houlding have proposed a group exhibition to explore the gap between destruction and beauty, hovering between the past and the future to suggest no specific sense of time or movement, but instead a sense of longing and reflection.

Ceri Hand Gallery was founded in 2008. The gallery is committed to promoting innovative artists working in all media, with a special interest in artists who work with performance. The gallery supports artists producing and exhibiting their work, offering a critical dialogue and exchange on the development of their practice and reaching diverse international audiences. The gallery also supports the production and distribution of publications, editions and multiples by gallery artists. Located in a converted warehouse in the docks of North of Liverpool, the gallery’s exhibitions receive regular reviews in a variety of national and international critical contexts, including Art Review, Frieze, Art Monthly, The Guardian and The Art Newspaper. The gallery has attended art fairs in Rotterdam, Basel, New York and Cologne and gallery artist's work is represented in UK and international museum and private collections.
