Transformational practices: on the place of material novelty in artistic change

Professor Scrivener has been developing the idea that artefacts function as new knowledge and understanding when they induce cognitive surprise. The chapter extends this idea by examining how surprise can operate in tandem with creative, critical interpretation. It forms part of ‘The Routledge Companion to Research in the Arts’, a pan-European publication with an international academic advisory board.
