Look club

Look Club is a research event involving one painting, one critic and audience. The 176 Zabludowicz Collection hosted the first Look Club event featuring the work of artist Phillip Allen in a conversation led by writer Martin Holman and artist Dereck Harris. The aim was for a critical interpretation of one specific painting to unfold during the course of the evening as the assembled audience engages with the focus of an aesthetic encounter. Dereck Harris coordinated this evening discussion and workshop and will co-edit the resulting text which will be published on the Paint Club website.

Paint Club is a research network open to all staff and research students at the University of the Arts London. Painting here is defined as an expanded field that relates to the specific histories and traditions of painting. Our activities publicly explore and debate what it means to research painting within the context of contemporary art practice. We aim to put on one or two events each year that respond to the concerns and interests of the membership. We are establishing a network of affiliations with other institutions both in the UK and world-wide.
