Plessner, Daphne (2011) Protest. The Citizen Artist . Citizen Artist Press, London, UK.

Type of Research: Book
Creators: Plessner, Daphne

‘Protest’ is a new publication by the Citizen Artist that sets out to organise and archive the visual motifs and public symbols of a protest from images available on google. By appropriating ephemeral imagery via image grabs, this publication seals one internet search, one moment of information in time and categorises the material for a mini archive in the form of a printed publication.

To date, the publication consists of a map with one side displaying a selection of protest routes that have been followed in London over the past 10 years. The flip side shows a collection of photographs of protesters with raised arms, the universal symbol of opposition, police barricades and images of burning placards and flags. The map is accompanied by a set of cards of protesters in costume with painted faces and/or masks.

However, it is available to customers at any point in the process with the understanding that requests for subsequent additions to the publication can be made at anytime.
