Description: | This work is based around a time and space (an interval) that by its very nature is defined by relative boundaries; a break or a pause in an otherwise continuum, creates an interval. Here, the photographic imagery is abstracted by methodology (focus/framing) or by architectural obstruction, with the figurative character in the work never being fully disclosed. This enhances the status of the photograph as withholding information or being a keeper of secrets; the viewer is left with an unfulfilled sense of desire wanting for completion. I am interested in temporal and spatial notions of 'interface' : this refers to the physical and the metaphysical, as well as other relative and/or divisive aspects embedded in the process, production and viewing of work that include personal, empirical, cultural or technological values. The figure is a core element in my work, partially visible and anonymous, but usually known to me. This becomes antoher reltive value, and one of personal significance - that which is intimate/familiar, becomin de-personalised and generic. This liberates the work from a specific personality or revelation, and instead offers a condition that is open and accessible to others to negotiate and contemplate. In this way ,k thw workks bcomes a possible sited for the sharring of related ideas, discourse and collaboration opportunities. This work was projected over a period of 1 month on a large scale video screen in Leicester Square. In this context, the dilemma between the public and private aspects of the work reached an extreme level, and all possiblilities of intimicacy were denied. |
