Closer: photographs by Stuart Griffiths

Exhibition curated for the 'Brighton Photo Biennale Fringe', of the photographs and archives of Stuart Griffiths.

This exhibition resulted from Stuart Griffiths' selection for the BPB Fringe 'Open' Award. After being a member of the judging panel, Val Williams curated the exhibition, which took place at the Phoenix Arts Centre in Brighton.
As well as the work on ex-military veterans which had formed the basis of the award, Williams and Griffiths explored Griffiths archives of letters, snapshots and drawings. These were used in the exhibition to create a history and context. Williams also created a Reading Room, which featured a selection of Griffiths' reference material, and included a combination of literary fiction and photo books.

Since the exhibition in Brighton, Griffiths has published a monograph of his Northern Ireland photographs and has established connections with museums and galleries which are interested in his work and in the CLOSER exhibition.
The exhibition illustrates the value of archives when exploring a contemporary body of work and how the use of supplementary material in a curatorial context can enhance and explain.
