Description: | TEDxGranta's Women 'Shaping the Future' was a one-day event in Cambridge that featured the pick of the content from December's TEDWomen in Washington DC (2010), as well as a lineup of Cambridge women who are shaping the future. The event took place at The Moller Centre on 15 February 2011. About Jenny Tillotson: “Above all, my deep desire is to change the life of women", says Jenny Tillotson, a Cambridge-born designer who is merging the ancient art of perfumery with modern technologies to develop new ways of enhancing emotional wellbeing. A Senior Research Fellow in the School of Fashion at Central Saint Martins College, Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and a STEM Science & Engineering Ambassador, Tillotson is working with Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge to connect fashion with material science, developing simpler, better consumer ‘wellness’ products which use the sense of smell as a communication tool. These will include wearable items that dispense a ‘wardrobe of fragrances’ to combat mood disorders and influence emotional states in different situations. The first product from her company Sensory Design & Technology is eScent®, a timed and controlled miniaturised therapeutic device which dispenses fragrance in response to user-driven stimuli and can be embedded in fashion and lifestyle products. Tillotson comes from a family ancestry of 19th century printing techniques (Tillotsons & Sons) and soap (Lever Bros). Today her goal is to fuse 21st century printed electronics with the science of smell. “I believe Cambridge is the place to fuse the two disciplines of scent/lifestyle and printing together,” she explains, “not least because it is the centre of printed electronics and microfluidics, but also for a personal reason; Tillotsons used to have a branch in Burwell, hence why I was born here.” |
