Flat screens

A series of 10 monthly film screenings in Studio 75, a disused flat on the Haggerston and Kingsland estate.

The project aimed to build a space for social exchange amongst residents and non residents at Haggerston and Kingsland estate. Most importantly, alongside the screenings the space offered a forum for the discussion to explore liminal areas of knowledge, participation, representation, and ways of seeing.

Flat Screens was fortunate to have incredible participation by the people attending the screenings and discussion, and also the generous visits by filmmakers showing their work (Sally Potter, John Smith, Dan Edelstyn). Presenting the work and organising stimulating, focussed debate were Gareth Evans and Alisa Lebow.

Similarly, involvement with Studio 75’s remarkable ‘Flat Screens’ operation in Haggerston, London, has been a moving and energising one. This council flat screening initiative (www.studio75.org.uk) by artist Andrea Luka Zimmerman and her colleagues, on an estate due to be demolished next year, vividly displays the centrality cinema can have to discussions on how to live and resist.
