Weberian Lessons: Art, Pedagogy and Managerialism

Beech’s contribution focuses on a reading of the ‘educational turn’ in art through the notion of deskilling, the ‘post-Cartesian artist’ and the movement from the artist-art object-viewer relationship towards the field of general social techniques. Beech’s work on current debates on post-Cartesianism in art also led to the invitation to contribute a ‘Keynote Essay’ (pp.15-29) to the book 'Searching for Art’s New Publics' (Jeni Walwin, ed.) 2010. Beech’s discussion of relational art practice in ‘Weberian "Lessons’ is also a feature of his chapter The Ideology of Duration in the Dematerialised Moment for the book 'Locating the Producers: Durational Approaches to Public Art' (Paul O’Neill and Claire Doherty, eds.) 2011.
