MOVE

Boyce, Sonia (2013) MOVE. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Boyce, Sonia
Description:

MOVE is a video by Boyce that is the outcome of a commissioned collaborative site-specific artwork for the 7th Gothenburg International Biennale of Contemporary Art (GIBCA, 2013) ‘Play! Recapturing the Radical Imagination’. MOVE is a process-led project that derives from engaging people in order to produce an artwork. Boyce’s research for MOVE asked how she might bring together the issues of the right to public protest and the importance of counter-cultural expression alongside a process that privileges play and spontaneity, without compromising either.

Site-specificity features strongly in many of Boyce’s recent artworks, and MOVE continues her investigations with ephemeral actions that produce concrete and content-rich artworks. Through discussions with Johan Heintz, a Gothenburg-based cultural activist, and Hannes Westberg (DJ Kali) a well-known activist who was notoriously shot by the police during the anti-globalisation demonstrations of 2001, Boyce was able to meet a group of Gothenburg DJs who organised an illegal club night similar to those popular during the 1980s and 1990s. The DJs agreed to provide the soundtrack for the ensuing film. Through the GIBCA curatorial team, Boyce was introduced to contemporary dancers, who were interested in responding through dance to several sites around Gothenburg that related to the club scene and the anti-globalisation demonstrations. Filming took three days. MOVE has been shown as part of ‘Leisure, Discipline & Punishment’, a pan-European series of International Biennales in 2013-2014.
