Description: | Salazar curated the retrospective exhibition of the work of the visionary Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Conceived as a site-specific installation with its core in one of the main exhibition galleries, Gallery 38, and small interventions throughout the V&A, Yamamoto’s menswear collections were included in the display of his work for the first time. Each space took its own meaning within the narrative of the exhibition which explored Yohji Yamamoto’s design world. The exhibition at the V&A was accompanied by three satellite exhibitions throughout London, also curated by Salazar: ‘Yohji’s Women’, 12th March -14th May 2011, an exhibition at the Wapping bankside gallery showing the work of 7 international photographers who have worked on Yamamoto's legendary catalogues produced between the early 1980s and 2005. ‘Yohji Making Waves, 12th March -14th July 2011’, an exhibition at The Wapping Project showed just one major piece in the cavernous Boiler House of the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station: the celebrated, oversized white silk wedding dress with bamboo crinoline A/W 1998. ‘Yohji Yamamoto at Work’, 10th June – 06th July 2011, at the Fashion Space Gallery told the lifecycle of a single garment, a dark navy sleeveless pleated dress from his Autumn/Winter 2010-11 season, in reverse sequence. Salazar also edited an accompanying publication which places Yamamoto's work in context with an insider’s perspectives through round table discussions, interviews and essays with and by his key collaborators and an interview with Yamamoto as well as through contextual essays by Salazar and Alexis Romano. |
