Description: | This article analyses original ideals of free improvisation in the UK, adaptations of those ideals that occurred in the 1990s, and the author’s experience of leading improvisation workshops with students at the University of the Arts London. It links the author’s role as a participant in improvisation classes run by Spontaneous Music Ensemble founder John Stevens in 1971 to the continuing relevance of ideas pioneered by Stevens, in both pedagogical formats and the public practice of improvising. |
