X-Form

The X-Form series of 2D-3D woven textiles developed by Brock is based on the systematic exploration of on-loom combinations of x-form paper folding and the use of smart yarns in the weft of the fabric.

The 3D folding/engineering properties of the woven structures of the fabric are visually enhanced through the light-changing properties of smart yarns which change significantly in different UV light conditions. The smart yarns are florescent and phosphorescent, emitting light and changing colour without the incorporation of LEDs, fibre optics or other fibres that require an external power source.

The x-formed works continue Brock’s research into digital industrially woven self-folding textiles (the ‘Self Fold’ series) which self-form into 3D immediately as they come off loom. Her work reveals how 3D textiles can be created directly off loom without the need for unsustainable post-weave finishing processes. Brock’s X-Form fabrics are developed and manufactured industrially on a Dataweave Jacquard loom; thus her weave structures can be transferred to commercial applications.

The X-Form series was developed for Brock’s solo exhibition, ‘2D-3D’, at the Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles, Canada 2012, and subsequently featured in ‘Digital Jacquard Mythologies’ at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University 2013, Shenzhen Modern Design Museum, China 2013 and The China National Silk Museum’s ‘First Hangzhou Triennial of Fibre Art’ 2013.
