Works from Hilary Lloyd

Eleven works by Hilary Lloyd [Moon (2011), Shirt (2011), Canada Square (2010), Pavement (2010), Thighs (2011), Tower Block(2011), Floor (2011), Building (2011), Striped Man (2011), Shard (2011) and Jewellery (2012)] were shown in this large-scale solo exhibition, using multiple split-screen videos installed with single and double monitors alongside multiple screen projections. Three other works by Lloyd were also shown. Lloyd intended to heighten visitors’ awareness of the structure of the museum and to dramatize their physical negotiation of that space. The Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel, has double height spaces, balconies and the extensive daylight, which was significant in Lloyd’s choice of which works to exhibit and in how to present them.

The Museum für Gegenwartskunst displays contemporary art from the collections of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation and the Kunstmuseum. The Director of the Museum, Nikola Dietrich, was introduced to Lloyd’s work through a solo exhibition at the Kunstverein Munich curated by Stefan Kalmár in 2006. In 2009 Dietrich included Lloyd’s work ‘Car Wash’ in the group exhibition ‘Little Theatre of Gesture’s for the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in collaboration with the Malmö Konsthalln. In 2001, Lloyd was also a resident of ‘Stiftung Laurenz-Haus’ in Basel created by Maja Oeri and Hans Bodenmann; her familiarity with both the architecture and the collection had a profound effect on the works made for the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in 2012.
