Local/Global: Women Artists in the Nineteenth Century investigates women artists working in disparate parts of the world in this formative period of modernity. Opening with a dedication to the pioneering art historian, Joan Kerr, the essays chart a journey beginning in Australia, and moving to the imperial court in China; South Asia, and the Ottoman empire. Painters and studios in Paris, women patron-builders in Britain and wrists in Ireland continue the direction west, and the collection concludes with essays on souvenir art by native and settler women, white settler identities, and on textiles in North America, and on women artists in Mexico.
