The Right Hands Gives, the Left Takes Away

Leigh Clarke was invited to curate a group project at a publically funded space in Nijmegen in the Netherlands named Extrapool. The project space focuses on alternative print practices that influence, include or combine performance art and experimental music.

The project entitled The Right Hand Gives, The Left Takes Away asked a cohort of artists to explore relationships between artist and sponsor, benefactor or collector and to consider philanthropy, charity, corporate sponsorship and private collecting within the art world as a basis for making work. They were to consider subject areas like student fees in art education, unethical business sponsorship in the arts and acts of generosity that has prompted growth in art practices.

The project was fully funded by the Mondrian Foundation and extra funding given by LCC and the Royal Academy Schools. An audio / catalogue publication was made alongside a performance event and an edition of prints. A full double page review if the event appeared in De VOLKSKRANT 29/03/14.

An evening of performance was programmed at the Performance Studio (London) by artist Leigh Clarke as a follow on this project on 23/04/2017.
