Weekly Returns

Public art series of five performances/talks and related publications for 'Cartographies of Life & Death: John Snow & Disease Mapping' for John Snow Bicentenary at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London.

Cole and Eggebert’s series of street lectures and performances see a number of cross-disciplinary speakers and performers return knowledge to the streets of Soho on a weekly basis. Referencing Farr’s Weekly Returns, Snow and Henry Broadhead’s local knowledge and Henry Mayhew’s records of those people whose survival was dependent on working in and below the streets street characters, vendors and performers from during the mid to late 1800s, these events offer not matches or birds’ nests but ideas, beliefs, poetry and song.

Each one of the five events was reproduced as a free weekly handout publication, available from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine’s Keppel Street site and various other locations which included drawings by Eggebert after the style of illustration in Mayhew's publication. Speaker contributors included Dr Willy Burgess, Earth Sciences, UCL, Julian Walker artist, and writer and researcher for the British Library, and Chris Grundy, Cartographer, LSHTM.
