Painting as Commitment

Talbot, Emma (2014) Painting as Commitment. In: Painting as Commitment, 21st June 2014, Firstsite, Colchester.

Type of Research: Conference, Symposium or Workshop Item
Creators: Talbot, Emma
Description:

Symposium led by Dr Sunil Manghani, Reader in Critical and Cultural Theory at Winchester School of Art. With the advent of new narratives of protest, social networks and community-engagement, the "social" and the "political" in art has been back in the spotlight. What does this mean for the painter? What is the " commitment" of/to painting, as an aesthetic and/or ethical/political practice? 5 artists drew upon their own practices in exploring and interrogating the subject in response to Dr Manghani's keynote paper.

Emma Talbot's paper referenced Helene Cixous's, Anais Nin's and Chris Kraus's writing in relation to ideas in her own practice. It related the process and attitudes of these writers to a committed approach to developing artwork.
