Description: | Article for the catalogue of the exhibition, 'HLYSNAN: The Notion and Politics of Listening' shown from May to September 2014 at the Gallery Casino, Luxembourg and curated by Berit Fischer and Kevin Muhlen. The article is about the remarkable woman, Svetlana Tsalko, who lived for most of her life in the village of Lychmany, inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Her knowledge of local folklore, traditions and the seasonal cycles of the environment is immense. Her response to the Chernobyl catastrophe was to start composing poetry based on acute observations of how the old relationships between people and nature were abruptly severed. The poems have not been written down, they remain in her head. |
