Type of Research: Conference, Symposium or Workshop Item
Creators: Rauch, Barbara
Description:

‘Digital Surface within Fine Art Practice’ was a collaborative project between Chelsea College of Art & Design, Camberwell College of Arts, the National College of Art & Design, Dublin and University of Art & Design, Helsinki fully supported by the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union, with 15 artists, 5 from each of the colleges. Tate Britain supported this project as collaborative partner.

The artists collaborated over the period of one year staging symposiums and discussions in each country in order to develop work on the theme of the digital surface. The evidence of this research was presented at a two-day conference ‘Digital Surface within Fine Art Practice’ at Tate Britain (27/28 June 2003).
The conference was documented by the Tate and accompanied by a CD-Rom. (ISBN 1-870225-96)

Rauch’s contribution to this project was the development of a new artwork ‘Emotive Recall’ and the presentation of the work in a research paper at the Tate Conference. The paper ‘Digital Surface of Thought’ was reproduced in its entirety in the CD-Rom ‘Digital Surface within Fine Art Practice’ that concluded the project. The paper documented the video installation and the making of the work. The themes within this work focused on dreams and memory within a virtual 3D environment. ‘Emotive Recall’ was subsequently presented at the Wrexham Arts Centre (8th March – 19th April, 2003) as a contribution to the Science & Art Festival. The piece was later selected for a conference screening at ‘Toward a Science of Consciousness’ Prague (published abstract). Rauch further presented this research by invitation at an AHRC funded symposium 'Creativity, Technology and Embodied Mind’ at Goldsmiths College, London. The proceedings of the symposium are available on both a DVD and on the website http://www.creativity-embodiedmind.com. ‘Emotive Recall’ was discussed in Rauch’s conference paper for ‘Beyond the Digital Surface’.
