Description: | This chapter explores two kinds of craftsmanship in fashion: that of the makers of McQueen’s spectacular showpieces, and that of the models who wore them. While the former often seemed to constrain the latter in unnatural poses, the models themselves insist that the clothes gave them a new freedom to perform, and a degree of autonomy unusual in fashion modelling. Powerful objects in their own right, the showpieces amount to what Bruno Latour has called ‘objects with agency’ and the chapter explores what happens when the agency of the object meets the agency of the fashion model. |
