Description: | ‘Intermediate II’ is a major solo exhibition, an installation using video and sculpture exploring: the social space of the street; subjectivity; voyeurism; relationships between exterior and interior social space; the viewer as an active participant in the work; documentary video; minimalist sculpture; relationships between the body and architecture. The context of this work draws from various contemporary discourses, a key text being Nicholas Bourriards Relational Aesthetics, in which he identifies an aesthetic of the interhuman, speaking to the context / experience of the encounter, of proximity, and of resisting social formatting. ‘Intermediate II’ comprises of a large wooden crate height 9ft x width 16ft x depth 11ft, containing an intensified version of a dance studio with mirrors on all four wall, barre and sprung floor, which the viewer could enter. Outside the crate and fixed to the gallery wall was a 27" monitor depicting a ballet class filmed from a busy street in London's King's Cross. The students are oblivious to the city outside, seemingly absorbed in another world, and the film is shown on a monitor placed high on the gallery wall so as to reinforce their remoteness and containment. The sense of alienation highlighting the complexities of capital and urban life. |
