The work selected for this exhibition was developed during a 6-month residency at Loman Street Studio a London multi-media design partnership in 2001, www.lomanstreetstudio.com.
The outcome of this residency was a series of site-specific installations creating a set of dialogues between virtual pattern and clay objects integrated throughout a high tech working environment. Areas of investigation focused on the relationship of digital technology to my studio practice and its application to a personalized visual language of natural elements, organic form and proceses. In ‘Feed’, the culminating installations, I infused the building’s surroundings with a combination of pixels and plant seed through the presentation of projections, moving image of digitalized pattern, ceramic patterned vessels and rattles for desktops. Situated works highlighted contrasts and marriages between the tactile and the virtual alluding to the possible interconnection of the buildings space with the human mind and the body. Architectural theorist Dr. Jane Rendell was commissioned for the exhibition essay. This body of work was crucial in extending my practice into areas of interdisciplinary and collaborative practice.
A group of vessels from this research was exhibited in ‘Pattern Crazy’, an exhibition presenting differing use of pattern by selected artists, designers, and craft practitioners. These were illustrated in French architectural digest AD Nouvelle Vague Britannique, (April 2005, p 42) and cited in Prof.Tanya Harrod’s paper ‘The use and impact of digital technology on studio ceramic practice and the handmade object 2002’ at the Pixel Raiders conference at the V&A.
The project was also cited and illustrated in a feature exploring my work and practice in relationship to the studio and the domestic environment by Phyllis Richardson in Contemporary Natural (Thames and Hudson 2002 ISBN 0-500-51092-X). Alison Britton reviewed feed in Ceramic Review, May/ June 2002
