Description: | The Hidden Presence exhibition is the culmination of a two-year engagement project from Ffotogallery Education, Chepstow Museum, and artists Eva Sajovic and Julian Germain. Sitting alongside the Hidden Presence exhibition at Customs House is a series of portraits, depicting young people from the Hidden Presence project, by photographer Eva Sajovic. Sajovic worked with young women who are vulnerable, at risk of, or have been, abused through sexual exploitation in Wales. The project was exploring themes around identity, self-image and self-representation (also online). Photographs taken by Sajovic have been exhibited on 20 bus shelters around Cardiff as part of Diffusion, the Cardiff International Festival of Photography. Hidden Presence is an artist-led project that aims to extend people’s understanding of Nathaniel Wells, an 18th and 19th century Welsh nobleman of mixed heritage who was the son of a white Welsh plantation owner and a black enslaved woman. The project is exploring the importance of his life in the context of Wales today, looking at a range of issues linked to individual’s cultural heritage, their identity, sense of belonging, citizenship and what it means to be Welsh. |
