Edward Scissorhands

Lee Alexander McQueen was born in London on 17 March 1969. Despite his untimely death in 2010, his life's work has much to celebrate. McQueen was a complex, creative and driven man; perhaps even a visionary. But whatever the contradictions inherent in his persona, what was indisputable was his extraordinary artistry in rendering fabric - and a diversity of other materials - in a completely original way. From the slashed and distressed fabrics of his early years, to the luxurious jacquards, delicate chiffons and fine Italian suiting of his later collections, fabric, scissors, chalk and thread were the agents of his trade.

This book was edited by Claire Wilcox, who also curated the 2015 London version of the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty became the V&A's most visited exhibition with 493,043 people seeing it in total during its almost five month run.

The original version of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2011 was organised by the Costume Institute and became one of the museum's top 10 most visited exhibitions.
