Elle Magazine cover shoot and Editorial Design: Print and Digital, in "A+: 100 yrs of visual communication by women at CSM"

Curated by Ruth Sykes, 'A+: 100 Years of Graphic Design by Women at CSM' honours one hundred years of visual communication by women at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

Work by established practitioners such as Morag Myerscough, Astrid Stavro, Lucienne Roberts and Sara De Bondt is shown together with earlier 20th century pieces by designers like Heather 'Herry' Perry, Dora Batty and Kathleen Hale. The exhibition also features work from many emerging designers, and over 50 practitioners are included.

Two editorial design pieces by Cath Caldwell were featured in this group exhibition:

EXHIBIT ONE
Elle Magazine cover shoot art directed by Cath Caldwell, featuring model Carla Bruni with body paint and the copy line 'all you need to wear' produced in Paris and London. This demonstrates the role of the creative director as the creative visionary developing the visual identity. In this case the ELLE editorial brand, at a time when supermodels were at a point were they were in charge of their own bodies. This cover embodied the mood at the time, post-grunge and with female body in complete control, shirking the fashion labels to give the reader confidence. It was chosen to feature in this exhibition as an example of risk-taking editorial design.

EXHIBIT TWO
The book Editorial Design: Print and Digital was also selected to be exhibited in this display as it is a text book written by two female authors, both who were taught at Central Saint Martins. The first edition was published in 2008 by Yolanda Zeppaterra, but this edition featured on display was rewritten by Cath Caldwell to include digital technology and it incorporated modern production techniques. The cover was designed by Pentagram designer Angus Highland.
