Description: | I painted ‘Portrait of Ruby’ at Dulwich Picture Gallery on 31st March 2004, in gouache on paper. The work began with the aim to set down the colour of what was seen in as direct a way as possible. Through the process of monitoring my practice I realized that working at speed allowed something linear to be captured that a longer sitting might lose. This experimental process was analysed through involvement with the Drawing and Cognition project of fellow researcher Dr. John Tchalenko. Through use of an eye tracker and capturing the process on film I was able to question the mechanisms of drawing, analyzing the processes that underlie the relation of artist to subject. |
