Description: | Invited to exhibit at a Norwich contemporary gallery, and fascinated by developments in nanotechnology, with assistance from scientists and written material I created a body of some sixteen new 2D and 3D textile works. Structures and their inherent patterns, which are revealed only with an electron microscope, showed a depth and layering not possible with standard photography and exposure to this science enabled new work and thinking to develop. An alternative world is revealed of complexities, layers of mystery, which scientists identify and I attempt to make visible through my personal interaction and practice. My palette consists of an unexpected range of usually hidden industrial textiles: some designed into composites supports to prevent soil erosion; water filters; fuel cells: protectors and those designed against electro interference. They become visible as I transform these thermoplastic soft materials into rigid structures with industrial electroplating techniques designed for metallising plastics creating a personal interpretation and aesthetic. A complimentary adjunct within the exhibition is the collaboration with Steven Harkin, a colleague and designer. He incorporated my engineered electroplated fabrics into his bags and accessories creating work born from fine art principles and adapted for the applied. Another colleague, Ceri Isaac, produced some digitally printed scarves created by scanning my fabrics and interpreting them into her design. This research and sharing has laid the foundations for future complementary endeavours. Contributing through my work to the demystifying of nanoscience is my goal. The benefits of the numerous discoveries in this science are incalculable. The blending of art and science contributes to this awareness helping make visible for others the enchantment of something that has always been there waiting to be revealed. |
Additional Information (Publicly available): | Frances Geesin's Research: I am currently working with the Institute of Nanotechnology exploring nanomedical images and interpreting them into 2D and 3D work for exhibitions. In preparation, I am collaborating with Steven Harkin (LCF), creating accessories with industrial materials and metalising techniques. I am also working with Queen Mary UL 'The Intelligent fashion Group "Living Colour"'. I am developing photonic systems onto textiles in collaboration with other specialists. This area of work has potential for many types of optical elements both passive and active. The emphasis of my research interest is in aesthetics. Fabric samples are presently being treated and the results will demonstrate the possibilities for, and viability of, future collaborations. A company has provided me with a range of industrial conductive shielding materials which I am currently using and assessing. The successful collaboration with Scilla Speet, Head of Jewellery at Central Saint Martins, continues as we enjoy each others contribution and involvement. I am working towards a project with a Cognitive Neural Scientist at Manchester University exploring fabric as a metaphor for representing pain. |
