Description: | I was commissioned to research new works for the exhibition, 'The Spirit of Liberty'. This work focused on developing ideas resulting from a series of placements at the Spode factory, Staffordshire. I worked on existing ware, researching and using the Spode archive of copper engraved transfers as a visual vocabulary, to be appropriated through collage to create new images. It is significant that my approach to this process is to be seen as a continuum of the factory’s own methods whereby in the 18th century, imported Chinese ceramics, featuring famous imagery such as Willow Pattern, were reinterpreted to become, in time, quintessentially English. |
