Description: | Grave is a sculptural piece using multiple feedback loops. The title of this piece, Grave, is the slowest setting on traditional metronomes. Grave is Italian for 'serious', but although it's slow, this piece is not entirely straight-faced. The sound consists of a complex feedback field created by 3 sources within the cabinet: the frequencies of the feedback are determined by the resonant frequencies of the enclosure and are modulated by the ticking of the mechanical metronome. One feedback loop is created by the microphone / camera / projector, and this is supplemented by two tiny hearing aids lying beneath the violin. The noise gates within the hearing aids ensure that their sound, which feeds into the microphone, is itself constantly changing, making it sound not unlike a tiny violinist sawing away at the tiny violin. |
Additional Information (Publicly available): | Adapted from the exhibition press release: The group exhibition 'the approach' at Gazelli Art House showcases an array of works by artists that have exhibited within the gallery’s programme since it’s London debut in 2010. Marking a new stage this fall some artists on display include: Aziz + Cucher, Aaron Koblin & Ben Tricklebank, John Wynne, Giovanni Ozzola, Stanley Casselman, Shan Hur and Walter & Zoniel among others. Bridging both universes, John Wynne’s Grave is a self–contained sculptural piece, which makes use of feedback, a process described by Nic Collins as “the Zen–like infinite amplification of silence.” A metronome modulates the feedback produced by three independent sources within the cabinet, providing the most basic rhythmic structure and melodic content to accompany the tiny, silent violin.
