Description: | White Noise" is a reflection on some of the structural and personal effects of hetero-patriarchal white supremacy, both historically and contemporarily and draws parallels between Section 28 - UK legislation for the prevention of the promotion of homosexuality that was law from 1988 to 2003; and Section 26 of the UK Counter-Terrorism and Security Act which came into force in 2015. Both laws, introduced by the UK Conservative Government in 1988 and 2015 respectively, share the same structure and intention to produce "non-citizens" - as a necessary reproduction of difference that in itself is intended to function as a stabilising force in their ongoing project of radical normativity. Whilst some of the content is UK specific, the structures explored in this audiowork resonate in various ways globally. As Robin DiAngelo explains, "this is how oppression works. It's deeply historic, embedded, take it for granted, it is not fluid and it doesn't change over time". The particular subject to be pathologised might sometimes shift, but the structure remains intact. So the question this piece poses is how might we transform a structure so that the impact could be more revolutionary and wider than our own privileged, individual lives. |
