Description: | Inside Outside Underground (IOU) was a 2 day event curated by Anne McCloy in collaboration with Sue Webster and Beat magazine to coincide with Frieze Art Fair London October 2015. IOU was produced in response to the high speed assimilation of the underground and creative culture into the mainstream. Artists were chosen for their distinctive and confrontational performance and representation through dress and style. To view our world through the lens of 'The Society Of The Spectacle' (Debord, 1967) where the spectacle is a ‘social relationship between people mediated by images’, activity is proposed to ‘wake up the spectator’ through radical action in the form of construction of situations'. Inside Outside Underground was conceived in an effort to challenge the acceptable norms of the conventional scene and provide a space for the idiosyncratic and the avant-garde while simultaneously exposing the diversity of artists from East London on a local and international level, from the extremes of the Venice Biennale to the darkroom at Central Station. It included a collaboration: Bo Ningen performed to a version of Noble and Webster’s 'HAIR' animation, especially re-created for this event. This collaboration was previously debuted together at the 2011 Venice Biennale, and at Yoko Ono's Meltdown 2013. Artists Winnie The Poof, Ayakamay, Class War, Eyeshadows, God, Luis Drayton, No Bra, and Wild Daughter created work. Artists in Residence John Booth and Helen Bullock provided a live illustrated soundtrack both nights. |
