Description: | Doctor Doom is one of Marvel's most popular and longest-standing super-villains, and although his plans are always thwarted in the end he does sometimes manage to actually conquer the world. When this happens the results are surprisingly beneficial for everybody. This paper will examine three texts in which Doctor Doom successfully takes control of the planet - "Cloak And Dagger" #10 (1987), the "Emperor Doom" graphic novel, and "The Amazing Spider-man" newspaper strip. In each of these Doom's rule has many benefits, including (but not limited to) ending poverty, racial intolerance and the nuclear arms race. However, on each occasion he is eventually deposed by superheroes banding together in the name of freedom, leading to all of the wrongs righted by Doom being reinstated and the heroes being forced to justify their actions to themselves and the readers. |
