Power in Numbers: Black British Artist Groups, Collectives and Networks Since the 1960s

Black British artist groups, collectives, and networks have long played a crucial role in shaping artistic and political discourse, yet their contributions remain underexamined in mainstream art history. This chapter explores the intersection of collectivist art activism and anti-racist, anti-imperialist efforts among Black artists in the UK from the 1960s to the present. Through case studies of the Caribbean Artists Movement, the Blk Art Group, and contemporary collectives such as Black Obsidian Sound System and Languid Hands, it examines the evolving strategies of solidarity, self-organization, and critical engagement. While these networks have provided essential support and advocacy, their persistence underscores ongoing structural barriers within the art world. By tracing cross-generational connections and shared tactics, this chapter highlights both the resilience of Black artist collectives and the urgent need for institutional change.
