The Graduation Project as a Site of Disciplinary Formation: Pedagogy, Practice and the Futures of Graphic Design

This article examines graduation-project pedagogy within BA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, positioning the graduation project not simply as a final assessment but as a site of disciplinary formation. In a context of growing recognition that graphic design has long been implicated in environmental, social and political crises, the article argues that graduation pedagogy can no longer be separated from broader questions about what graphic design is for, how practitioners are formed, and what kinds of futures design education enables.

The article outlines an educational model in which the graduation project is understood as an integrated portfolio comprising both a practice-based project and a critical report, with writing and making treated as mutually constitutive forms of enquiry. Drawing on theories of scaffolding, research through practice and Communities of Practice, the article examines three interconnected pedagogic strategies: supporting the transition into self-directed practice through the Constructing Briefs tool; integrating writing and making through sequenced pedagogic design; and situating student work in dialogue with external professional communities through industry roundtables structured around exchange rather than evaluation.

Across these case studies, the article proposes that graduation-project teaching is not simply concerned with employability or the production of final outcomes, but with supporting students in developing authorship, disciplinary positioning and critical agency. Graduation pedagogy is therefore framed as a small but significant site through which the future values, practices and politics of graphic design continue to be negotiated.
