'Old into New'

This piece started as part of a greater project which is the quest for a deeper and broader understanding of costume and the role it plays in performance. Caroline Evans speaks about the way mirrors have theatricalised the self and how through the mirror the boundaries of the everyday and the theatrical become fluid. This piece was developed with the intention of disrupting the everyday in a gallery or exhibition setting through the use of dress and performance.

The title refers to the very definition of costume as opposite to fashion – costume is often conceived as old, understood and readable dress forms- an acceptable language of performance, hopefully rendered new through a design process. In this context the transformation of old is also the opportunity of taking old forms into new through the use of new technologies and also to use this as a pretext for challenging established ways of making performance – making the dress the dramaturge and creating movement that emerges from it.
