Creation in Sustainable Fashion - Rio Moda Discute Internacional 2012

Rio de Janeiro’s first Fashion and Sustainability Discute Internacional was organized by Rio Moda Brazil, who provide a conduit between academic and industry practice, facilitating development of expertise in fashion with a particular emphasis on ‘creativity, authorship and management skills as mainsprings of an industry that operates in a more conscious and responsible way.’

CSF Director, Dilys Williams, was invited to speak on the social role of fashion and its interaction with the natural environment. Her presentation included an overview of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion and the work done by the centre to address our role in a more sustainable and future, nurturing and supporting our environment, and living within ecological limits. Brazil recently overtook the UK to become the world’s sixth largest economy, with the textile and fashion sectors being the second largest employers in Brazil. As such, the roles society play in fashion are pivotal, and key in ensuring a well balanced and sustainable future for the fashion industry. Other keynote speakers included academics, practicing designers and activists.
