Playing with words : the spoken word in artistic practice

Edited by Cathy Lane, 'Playing with words' is an anthology of works from over forty leading contemporary sound artists and composers who use words, particularly spoken words, as their material and inspiration. Each invited contributor has responded with a work for this edition, revealing a rich variety of artistic approach and exploration of the spoken and written word communicated through sound poetry, interviews, creative writing, visual-textual pieces and performance scores.

This book is edited by Cathy Lane and designed by Colin Sackett and features a wide range of work from over 40 leading contemporary composers. It was published by RGAP in Autumn 2008 and launched at the Small Publishers Book Fair in London and at the Frankfurt book fair, where a night of related performances was held at the Gallus Theatre. The book also inspired a symposium at the Tate Modern, a study day at LCC and a CD compilation, funded by an AHRC grant.
