Exploring creative alternatives for collecting student voice for curriculum Development

This active participatory workshop looked at ways to collect meaningful feedback about how students experience these curricula, especially since surveys often don’t work. Students enrol to study creative disciplines and express themselves in creative languages which surveys are ill-equipped to capture. Response rates are notoriously low, and are unsatisfying to students, often yielding feedback that lacks meaning.

Based on research with students, this‘anti-survey' workshop gave participants three approaches which were co--designed or tested with UAL students. Seizing scissors, paper, glue and emojis rather than Likert scales and text boxes, we explored how we might engage students in ways that provoke meaningful discussions and generate quality evidence-based insights while also contributing to student learning. These are all evaluative tools that can be embedded into teaching sessions to provoke meaningful conversations. Inclusive approaches:
1. Collaborative Collaging – with glue, scissors, magazines and paper.
2. Emoji mapping - shared discussion, collective mapping exploring pain points and highlights of a learning journey
3. Physical five – moving about the room into different groupings to explore scales
